Aria, extract. Bachianas Brasileiras n°5 by H. Villa-Lobos.
Taking the opposite approach of Ville d’Avril here, with this sumptuous Aria, from the series of nine Bachianas Brasileiras by Villa-Lobos (and a true Brazilian hymn), because it was at first a complete transcription of the original work that my interpretation began and not the contrary. And if this one was relatively easy to realize, I must admit how difficult it was to write, afterwards, its demanding adaptation for solo guitar. The reasons for the magnitude of the task are, I think, unnecessary to enumerate; they are contained in the challenge assigned, a little crazy I admit. But, for an instrument such as the guitar, the art of arranging (or adapting) often leads to a form of « sacrificial art », so may I at least hope that the present version of this mythical aria does not at any time evoke the sacrifice of art

THE LITTLE STORY : what did Roland Dyens say about the music of ensemble ?

I was a bit sceptical about guitar ensemble music because what I had heard , did not convince me, did not seduce me, because it was a very approximate transcription. And then I got caught up in the game and I said to myself: if with a guitar ensemble you don’t focus on the colors, the tones, the sound layers, then you’re really missing something. And there I got caught up in the game {…} of ensemble music because it’s not just about the sound, it’s about the human experience. I like that. I’m going to be confronted with guitarists and it’s going to be an adventure, a journey together, we’re going to build this together. »
